As mentioned in our post a couple of weeks ago we had our Black Wellness Session on Friday, March 11th. It was sincerely an incredible event. The session started with the community entrepreneur and yoga specialist Brandon Dawson-Jarvis (spoken about on the CBC website). What an empowering presentation as he dug into mental health within the Black community. Given the sensitivity of the topic, as a community, we tend to neglect the conversation, especially for Black men. He went into his life story and how the notion of suppressing one’s feelings had great repercussions on his wellbeing. He also spoke about the overall disparities within the mental health systems in Quebec. It was truly an eye-opening experience as many Black men and women expressed similar thoughts and feelings.
After Brandon’s presentation, the DINAH Mission had the opportunity to speak on the mission in question. Ohemaa lead the conversation about DINAH Mission‘s purpose and how it seeks to accomplish this objective. It was an inspiring presentation as Ohemaa spoke on the important topic of childhood sexual trauma within the Black communities. The DINAH Mission had the opportunity to present the project coming up in the Fall of this year (stay tuned! projects ).
Finally, we ended the beautiful night with a relaxing yet empowering session by Jacqueline Powell. Jacqueline graced us with her holistic approach to therapy and yoga session. Though we probably did not follow her instructions to the tee (lol) we definitely reaped the benefits. In like manner, we left the session with less tension and pressure. We were also fortunate to hear about Jacqueline’s experiences.
Overall, it was an incredible event. We are very grateful for the collaborative efforts with ACSioN Concordia as we made this beautiful dream come true!
